Admissions:
This past Friday my 21 yo schizophrenic son was "dumped" by Sylvia Brafman Mental Health- sent off facility on a baker act, but the baker act facility denied him as "too competent", and Sylvia Brafman wouldn't take him back. Incredibly shady and unethical, highly stressful, and upsetting. My son was under a mental health court order to be inpatient and the Sylvia Brafman leadership knew they were leaving us in a bad position by not allowing him back until he could at least be placed somewhere. Essentially they neglected any form of proper discharge and abandoned him. I had to rush 3 hours south at 4 am to pick him up and we needed to find another facility asap.
Jayce from Sill Mind answered our call. My son was stressed and on the first interview was really struggling to answer questions. He unfortunately didn't provide Jayce enough to work with for admission.
The next morning to my surprise, Jayce called us back...he opened up and shared with my son about his own challenges and expressed that "everyone needs a second chance". My son opened up more and thankfully he passed the admission. Jayce coordinated with us till we were on site.
Upon arrival to Still Mind, the facility presented as a modest house near downtown Ft Lauderdale.
At first I was a little uncertain but when the door opened we were greeted with some big dudes full of smiles and jovial loving attitudes. I have legal guardianship of my son and am a medical professional in private practice for 20 years with an additional 5 years military. I was introduced to the nurse who discussed med management and took his meds from me. The therapist Miriam seemed awesome, and came back to work at the end of the day to meet me and discuss my son's case. I was very impressed with her compassionate approach. The director of operations, Sarah ,was kind and straightforward, opening the lines of communication immediately.
Today was my son's first day there and I spoke to his case manager, Sage, who listened and was efficient at getting me a letter of treatment for the court. An assistant therapist, Josh called me for a family to family call, and engaged really well via phone with my son and I. Finally, their insurance guy Brody called, and made taking care of my deductible easy.
My son was at Sylvia Brafman for five days and after multiple requests to engage with his therapist, I never got to speak to her until she called about his baker act-and her story was questionable and didn't align with their owners version. As a medical professional and Court appointed plenary guardian of my son, I expected communication from their clinical team directly with me within at least 72 hours. The Still Mind team outperformed what I saw at Sylvia Brafman over the course of five days, in the first hour my son and I were on site.
Still Mind may be a more modest facility than some places in south Florida, but on first impression I felt like we were being embraced into the congregation at a great down-home church. It Reminded me of the good folks in New Orleans where my wife comes from...non judgmental, open minded, loving, and full of positive vibes.
I'll take angels in jeans and t-shirts caring for my son any day over devils in expensive suits.
I'm Praying I can follow up as he progresses through his care with another 5-star review.
Thank you again Jayce for giving my son the second chance and getting him admitted.
We are parents of a client who went to StillHealth so our review is based on our interactions with staff as outside family members. Still Health was instrumental in getting our loved one on the path to stabilization of her main behavioral conditions. At the Crisis Center in our town where we took her, she voiced unwillingness to go to an inpatient facility. Steve Hazel from admissions at Still was able to call her up and spend enough time explaining the specifics so as to convince her to accept coming to Still. We felt the need to issue a Marchman Act in order to assure that she remained on treatment, and Steve gave us early advice and placed us in contact with the lawyer who dealt with other similar cases when such an Act was deemed necessary. The kind chauffeur who drove her to Still from our town 4 and 1/2 hours away was also quite appeasing to her, as were all other Admissions personnel, nurses, and therapists we interacted with. Nikki in Finance was also very good at explaining what the insurance covers, and our required copays and maximum out of pocket responsibilities. Our daughter obtained multiple very valuable coping tools and instruments during the inpatient month which she took with her to the next step- the PHP or partial hospitalization program- at Sylvia Brafman Center. Still Mind suggested she go to Brafman and arranged for the transfer, and her improvements have continued at that institution.
Thank you, Still Mind, for assisting us during one of the toughest stages of our lives.
