I have been able to stay sober for 7.5 years because of the foundation I received at Mountainside. Choosing this treatment center was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Mountainside’s philosophy focuses on treating the body, mind, and soul, offering practices such as yoga, meditation, and acupuncture. For me, it was a place where I could fully focus on my recovery in a safe, comfortable, and deeply supportive environment.
Mountainside also has an outstanding alumni outreach program. The alumni department truly cares about the long-term success of former clients. They organize wonderful activities and periodically reach out just to check in and see how I’m doing, which has meant more to me than I can express.
My experience at Mountainside Treatment has been pivotal in the coarse of my life and the depth of my recovery. The facility itself is stunning; some of the original colonial structures dating back over 100 years and others embody modern architectural beauty. Thus creating an environment perfect to commune with the surrounding nature and history of the property.
The focuses on comprehensive recovery; mind, body, spirit. This differs from many other facilities I've been to. I was really taken with the focus on inward reflection, tapping into a deep connection the self, I had neglected over many decades. Clinicians help to foster this through intense therapies. The wellness department also focuses on connection with dormant parts often self. The curriculum can be a lot at times, the days are long. Here is where the work begins.
Ultimately, recovery will only happen if the individual is ready to heal. Mountainside affords all clients the opportunity to start anew. I can't encourage all enough to consider this facility. I have known a new freedom and a new happiness as a result of my time at Mountainside.
Mountainside is amazing. Truly changed my life and I am happier and a more productive member of society since I went there almost 3 years ago. I was a heavy drinker for years and years, and tried unsuccessfully to quit on my own many times. It wasn't until I went to Mountainside that I finally gained the tools to put down the bottle and find better ways to fulfill my life. There is hope for a better life, and Mountainside will give you that hope and the strategies to change your life. The staff is amazing, and I actually made a lot of friends there that I still keep in touch with. I go back every chance I get for their awesome alumni events. I highly recommend Mountainside!
So grateful to have found Mountainside. My husband was fortunate enough to start his sobriety journey with mountainside and learned so much. He was able to participate in many activities ( yoga, hikes, accupuncture, sound baths) in addition to his one on one therapy sessions and drug and alcohol courses. The knowledge he brought home benefits not only himself but for our family. Very grateful for the staff! I was able to connect with a wonderful therapist through mountainside and participated in a session with her and my husband. We were able to discuss worries, issues and set a plan on how we are going to navigate our day to day responsibilities ( work, kids) while still focusing on my husband’s sobriety journey. Sundays I was able to visit with our two kids. They make the facility feel calm, peaceful and comfortable for kids. They were able to stay occupied and play/color with their dad during the few hour visits. Couldn’t say more positive things about this facility. We are just so grateful.
Mountainside was genuinely life-changing for me. I completed detox and residential treatment at the Canaan campus, followed by IOP and OP through their NYC location. I’ve maintained long-term sobriety as a direct result of this program, as have multiple members of my family. The care model is comprehensive, structured, and consistent across levels of treatment, which made continuity and long-term recovery possible.
I was surprised to see several one-star reviews, as they do not align with my experience or with what I consistently heard from other clients—many of whom credit Mountainside with saving their lives or giving them their lives back. After reading those reviews closely, most appear to omit key facts or misunderstand standard medical, legal, or administrative practices.
Honestly though, most of those 1 star reviews aren’t actually accurate, or only telling half of the story.
First 1-star review that I saw:
The allegations from the guy not getting an opiate detox protocol? I’m an opiate addict, I got an opiate detox protocol, every single other opiate addict in treatment got an opiate detox protocol. In that review, this guy’s complaining he wasn’t given an opiate detox protocol “despite thousands of dollars of recent high grade opiate use history.” Well, that’s not the standard for detoxing someone off of opiates. Spending lots of money on opiates in your past doesn’t necessitate an opiate detox protocol.
***You have to be withdrawing from opiates before starting an opiate detox protocol.***
If there are zero opiates in your system, and if you are not currently in a state of withdrawal, than it would be medically insane (and possibly illegal, I don’t even know) for Mountainside to put you on an opiate detox protocol. Opiate detox protocols can involve some incredibly potent drugs that can be addictive in their own right, like methadone.
That review makes no sense especially because my brother, opiate addict but in recent years he had traded his opiate addiction for these highly concentrated Kratom drinks, still was put on a suboxone regimen at Mountainside. So yeah, I guarantee there is more to that story.

The second 1-star review:
The lady complaining about her husband admitting and then she was getting no information about his condition from Mountainside? As she puts it “they never had him sign a release of information (ROI).” Lady, I hate to break it to you but your husband DECLINED to sign an ROI for you. ROIs are like one of the first things you do, like within a few days if not immediately (it sort of seemed to depend on your state when you admitted, I was absolutely slapped when I admitted so I don’t think I did one until day 2 or day 3). Nobody forgot to ask that guy to sign an ROI, it’s literally a part of this Q and A process they go over on a computer, line by line, clicking through all these options based on your answers. As far as her saying “When I said I’d drop off a letter for him, admissions threatened to call the police on me,” well yeah an ROI isn’t something you need to drop off, it doesn’t require anything from anybody but the patient.
Also as far as the “they had no issue calling me about his insurance” complaint. Well, the people who deal with admissions, insurance, and financials are entirely separate from the staff who deal with our treatment and who actually see us in person. They keep that stuff separate, for good reason, because it means whoever is interacting with you on the insurance / financial stuff is as impartial and objective as humanly possible. That’s how I’d want it personally.
I also saw reviews criticizing Mountainside for being “for-profit,” but that applies every private rehab. Being for-profit doesn’t automatically mean they don’t care or are trying to rip people off. When I was financially tapped out, they gave me scholarship days, and I personally knew others who received major discounts. That doesn’t line up at all with the idea that Mountainside is just greedy and indifferent to outcomes.
