What Our Patients Say About Us

I highly recommend this program to anyone who is ready to change their life for the better

My month at Hawaii Island Recovery has been amazing. The therapists and staff are fantastic and have helped me overcome traumas I have been holding onto for 13 + years. They have taught me a large variety of skills to manage my anxiety and made my detox as comfortable as possible.

From the Excellent Therapist to the Comfortable Home

I had previously been to two different rehab centers, and none of them compared to the experience and help I received while staying at Hawaii Island Recovery. From the excellent therapist to the comfortable home. You can tell they want to help you, and it’s not all about the money. Jimmy and the administrative staff work hard to give you the best possible treatment while still treating you like an average person. The therapist all have different styles for different people that don’t sound so scripted, making sessions feel more like everyday conversations than question after question about life. The Residential staff was terrific. They were always there to talk, and if they had a bad day, you were never able to tell because they put us before them. Nicole may be the most caring person on earth, and Kevin the biggest heart of anyone I’ve met. Lastly, the chef was excellent. She makes sure you are well fed and will accommodate what you want and not stick to the same menu. All in all, I’m glad I came to HIR and would recommend it to anybody serious about their recovery.

I have never in my life known recovery like I found at this place! Chevonne and the rest of the team are absolutely phenomenal when it comes to relating to the clients. I felt welcomed and all my needs were met plus some. if you are searching for a place to find true recovery then this is definitely the place you want to be. also my therapist Toby was absolutely incredible. the nature therapy that he does is incomparable .I learned who I truly was while I was here and I learned to love myself again! there is no place like it in my opinion!

This was my first visit to a treatment facility, so I do not have anything else to compare it to. However, I was very worried when searching for an inpatient treatment facility what I would be signing up for. I heard negative things from other people's experiences at different treatment centers. After I arrived at HIR and was there for a week, I was pleasantly surprised at the level of care provided. All of the doctors, therapists and staff were great. Sure, there are rules that all treatment centers have to protect patients, but I was fine with the rules applied here - the level of care made up for it. There are typically only 6-7 other patients which means you get the attention, focus and help anytime you need it. You also build a strong bond with everyone. There are plenty of outside activities where you can really enjoy Hawaii as a local not a tourist. As with any treatment center you should have a list of questions and concerns when you call for more information, you will get honest responses to help you make the decision. Just remember, this is recovery treatment, you want the facility with the best doctors and therapists so you can get better. The rest is an added bonus. HIR has all the above.

I owe my sobriety to Hawaii Island Recovery. HIR was the third and final treatment center I went to. From the comfortable living quarters to the medical team and the staff, my expectations were far exceeded. The recovery community in Kona is outstanding and supportive. When I came to HIR, I had little hope for my sobriety goals. Through the therapy, group sessions, activities, and bonding with my housemates, I was able to leave with a new sense of freedom. What sets HIR apart from most treatment centers is that they understand this journey usually cannot be completed in 30 days. The staff truly works to assess the level of care you need and allows for extended stays. I stayed for two months and did not want to leave. Every weekend we would go to the beach, have massage, acupuncture, and yoga, etc. We went to the gym several times a week and it allowed me to get back into physical shape. The medical team got me on medications that truly helped me, rather than prescribing a slew of meds like previous centers did. I truly felt taken care of both mentally and physically. On top of that, the personal chef cooked great and comforting meals. There is downtime to focus on new hobbies and to disconnect from the outside world. I’d recommend HIR to anyone looking to change their life and become free from addiction. Thank you HIR staff for everything. I cannot wait to come back and visit you all.

On the fifth of September in 2019, I was picked up at Kona Airport by two people who would become and part of my recovery team. I was overweight, overwhelmed, malnourished, dehydrated, and detoxing. I was vetted to assure my openess and willingness before I was lucky enough to be be accepted into the facility. I stopped digging and reached my bottom and Hawaiian Island Recovery helped me find my own path to true recovery and not just the cessation of drugs and alcohol. It was an uncomfortable path that was eased by the feeling of security, acceptance, understanding, and kindness provided by medical and clinical staff, many whom had the shared experience of recovering from mental health issues and/or addiction. Being that I had a dual diagnosis, I felt comfort, and truly understood while being given the compassion and empathy only people of that background can provide. I participated in all the different types of therapy provided. I was all in and fully committed. I built a strong foundation in sobriety with the tools I learned and the integration into the local sober community through A.A. and other activities that brought us patients into the world through visiting spiritual places, swimming with dolphins, and visiting other cultural sites. My care was managed very well and holistic. My nutritional needs were met with great food, my safety was never in question, my mental health was addressed through many modes of treatment, therapy, meditations, and education. I gave everything I had into their core philosophy of addiction treatment and participated with no expectation of a great outcome. I sit here writing this long overdue review with over five years of sobriety. I continue to improve as a person by evolving and adding to the tools they provided me for navigating live with Mental Illnesses and Substance Use Disorder. I would be dead without Jimmy and the team around him. They inspired hope by being examples of loving and caring individuals who maintained their own recovery while giving their best efforts in the work of helping the world one person at a time. I now have a wife and daughter along with another new purpose I found in life by working with others. I celebrate and honor the efforts and contributions by H.I.R. to my recovery by giving my best effort in living a meaningful life of love, service, and gratitude. I continue to evolve into the person I always used to admire. I have gained a life and reclaimed passion. It all started in Kona with seven other patients and a dedicated team of great human beings. Remember, you get back what you put into it. I believe they have a great flexible, evidence based plan of treatment in a beautiful facility that can suit anyone on their journey of recovery. I will forever be grateful. Take Care and Give Love. M.G.B.

I just completed a 90 day stay at HIR, they only admit up to 8 patients at one time, as such you receive a lot of attention/help. They completely addressed all my issues They guided me thru detox and spent weeks educating me about the effects of my drug of choice. Hands down worth every penny as I am leaving with my life back, they even addressed the family issues that come with using. Thank you HIR.
